The Van Sweringen Brothers: What They Learned and How They Applied It In-Person

The presentation will begin with a brief look the early days of Cleveland and its rise as the home of some of America’s wealthy families, and will continue with a look at the Van Sweringen brothers, who were born into abject poverty, just outside of Wooster, in Wayne County, Ohio, and how they struggled and failed in their earliest business efforts.

We will continue with a look at the development of what became Cleveland Heights. We will see what the Van Sweringens learned from the accomplishments and mistakes of the various independent developers, and how the brothers applied those lessons to create not only what became one of the wealthiest communities in America, but what became the third-largest railroad empire in the nation as well.
