Negro League Baseball and Integration in Cleveland, 1920 to 1950 In-Person

In this talk, Dr. Stephanie Liscio will discuss the history of Negro League baseball in Cleveland and the integration of the Indians. While most people consider Jackie Robinson to be the first African American to play in the segregated white major leagues, 1947 technically represented the re-integration of professional baseball. Cleveland made history in 1947 when Larry Doby integrated major league baseball’s American League, joining the Indians just eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson. It would be another twelve years before the rest of major league baseball would integrate, showing that Cleveland was ahead of the curve in many ways.
