Heights Art Lecture: Exhibiting the World - Universal Expositions and the Spectacle of the Exotic In-Person
Through the 19th and 20th centuries, cities around the world hosted massive international gatherings in which nations displayed their latest innovations and accomplishments. These cultural Olympics were fierce political competitions that justified imperialism and celebrated colonialism. Yet the Expositions also celebrated arts, industry, diversity, and curiosity, inspiring new creations and fostering transnational connections.
