Unpacking Our History Presents
The Water We Swim In: An Examination of Systemic Influences on Our Attitudes

Hosted on Zoom Meeting ID: 823 648 5349 Passcode: 691353 This talk will make the case that systemic forms of oppression are maintained and reinforced through subtle patterns of thought and behavior, and present some paths through which those systems can be challenged. More specifically, the talk will hone in on two psychological means through which systemic oppression is maintained and reinforced, biased nonverbal signals and microaggressions. The talk will conclude with evidence that education about historical racial injustices can challenge internalized racial biases. Dr. Skinner-Dorkenoo has been an assistant professor at the University of Georgia since the fall of 2019. She is the Director of the Georgia Attitude, Bias, and Behavior Acquisition (GABBA) Lab that examines how systemic forms of oppression are maintained and reinforced through subtle patterns of thought and behavior, and how those systems can be challenged.
